Houston Airports is marking a milestone holiday travel season, celebrating both record-breaking passenger numbers and groundbreaking reductions in roadway congestion at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). From December 20 to December 30, 2024, IAH welcomed 1.7 million passengers—an impressive increase of 300,000 compared to the same period in 2023.

A Holiday Travel Triumph

Despite the surge in passenger traffic, Houston Airports implemented strategies that delivered measurable improvements in traffic flow. Enhanced infrastructure, operational upgrades, and innovative customer service initiatives played a pivotal role in ensuring a smoother travel experience for passengers and drivers alike.

Traffic Reductions That Define Success

The results of these efforts were remarkable:

A New Standard for Holiday Travel

Houston Airports’ commitment to improving the traveler experience has set a new benchmark for efficiency during peak travel periods. These advancements not only benefited local commuters but also enhanced the overall holiday journey for millions of travelers.

As the holiday season officially concludes, the achievements at Bush Airport underscore Houston Airports’ role as a leader in innovation and customer satisfaction in the aviation industry.

Transforming the travel experience
“Our goal was to deliver a seamless journey during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports. “The results show that our investments in infrastructure, technology and customer service are paying off. We are proud of our team and the traveling public for working together to make this holiday season a success. Our coordinated efforts between Houston Airports and Houston Police kept traffic flowing smoothly at our departure curbs while passengers followed instructions and used cell phones lots effectively. These efforts, paired with infrastructure improvements like the new International Arrivals Curb and expanded Terminal C garage entrance, demonstrate our commitment to delivering world-class service and efficiency.”

In 2024, Houston Airports implemented key improvements that made a significant difference for holiday travelers, ensuring a seamless experience during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year.

Traffic Flow Solutions

The opening of the new IAH International Arrivals Curb on December 14 was a game-changer. Featuring seven dedicated lanes, the curb was designed to reduce congestion and streamline pick-up operations for arriving passengers. Additionally, a previously closed entry roadway lane was reopened ahead of the Thanksgiving travel period, further alleviating traffic bottlenecks.

Expanded Customer Service

Houston Airports bolstered its team by increasing the number of Landside Agents and Customer Service Representatives, who were stationed across key areas to assist passengers and manage traffic flow. A coordinated effort with the Houston Police Department and other law enforcement agencies ensured smooth operations and maintained safety throughout the holiday season.

Enhanced Parking Systems

Efficiency and convenience were prioritized with the introduction of a cashless parking system at HAS garages and ecopark. This modernized system allowed travelers to reserve parking spaces in advance, reducing wait times and simplifying the parking process.

A Model for Success

These strategic enhancements not only improved the travel experience for passengers but also demonstrated Houston Airports’ commitment to innovation and operational excellence during peak travel times.

Delivering on our promise
“Our focus is always on providing a safe, stress-free experience,” said Kelly Woodward, chief operating officer for Houston Airports. “These upgrades allowed us to accommodate record passenger numbers while keeping traffic flowing. It’s a win for travelers and our city.”

Looking Ahead: A Commitment to Growth and Excellence

Houston Airports is forging ahead with transformative projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure and passenger experience. Early 2025 will mark a significant milestone as the new International Central Processor at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) enters its first phase. This includes the opening of 11 upper-level lanes and the transition of United Airlines’ Terminal E check-in operations to the new state-of-the-art facility.

Ongoing Infrastructure Enhancements
