Houston Airports is marking a milestone holiday travel season, celebrating both record-breaking passenger numbers and groundbreaking reductions in roadway congestion at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). From December 20 to December 30, 2024, IAH welcomed 1.7 million passengers—an impressive increase of 300,000 compared to the same period in 2023.

Despite the surge in passenger traffic, Houston Airports implemented strategies that delivered measurable improvements in traffic flow. Enhanced infrastructure, operational upgrades, and innovative customer service initiatives played a pivotal role in ensuring a smoother travel experience for passengers and drivers alike.

Traffic Reductions That Define Success

The results of these efforts were remarkable:

Heavy traffic periods entering Bush Airport were reduced by 90% compared to last Christmas.
Severe traffic periods saw a staggering 99% decrease. Drivers who faced 5.4 hours of severe traffic in 2023 experienced just 2 minutes of congestion this year.

Traffic Flow Solutions

The opening of the new IAH International Arrivals Curb on December 14 was a game-changer. Featuring seven dedicated lanes, the curb was designed to reduce congestion and streamline pick-up operations for arriving passengers. Additionally, a previously closed entry roadway lane was reopened ahead of the Thanksgiving travel period, further alleviating traffic bottlenecks.

Expanded Customer Service

Houston Airports bolstered its team by increasing the number of Landside Agents and Customer Service Representatives, who were stationed across key areas to assist passengers and manage traffic flow. A coordinated effort with the Houston Police Department and other law enforcement agencies ensured smooth operations and maintained safety throughout the holiday season.

Enhanced Parking Systems

Efficiency and convenience were prioritized with the introduction of a cashless parking system at HAS garages and ecopark. This modernized system allowed travelers to reserve parking spaces in advance, reducing wait times and simplifying the parking process.

Early 2025 will mark a significant milestone as the new International Central Processor at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) enters its first phase. This includes the opening of 11 upper-level lanes and the transition of United Airlines’ Terminal E check-in operations to the new state-of-the-art facility.
